Title: Bluetooth 5.1 positioning system with dead reckoning

Department: HMS Labs

Size: 1-4 students

Scope: Wireless communications and sensor technology

Description: There is an increasing interest in mobile machines for industrial use cases. One area that needs to be solved is the precise positioning of mobile machines. Mobile machines are commonly battery operated and connected by a wireless connection. Wireless technology such as Bluetooth can achieve indoor positioning with an accuracy better than 1 metre. This assumes direct line of sight between the mobile machine and the positioning anchors. In case of non-line-of-sight the precision will be much lower. In order to overcome this limitation Bluetooth positioning should be combined with dead reckoning and potentially also other positioning methods.

The goal of this thesis project is to develop a solution for fine grained positioning based on Bluetooth 5.1. The solution should combine wireless positioning with dead reckoning in order to increase accuracy for non-line-of-sight situations. It is envisioned that many mobile machines will exist within the same facility, so the positioning system should have a centralized architecture.

The project and scope can be adjusted to the size of the group and the participants.

Prerequisites:
Bachelor or master program within telecommunications or similar. Experience in a programming environment suitable for development like Python or Matlab, knowledge in wireless technologies. Experience in artificial intelligence, C/C++, make, CMake is an advantage.
