5G-based distributed Cloud/Edge application deployment

Description: There is an increasing interest in integrating 5G in industrial applications. The emerging Industry 4.0 demands for connecting different sectors of a supply chain to fully automate the production process; from the webshop to the factory floor and the final product shipping to the customer must be interconnected using different technologies such as web, IoT, machine-to-machine communication (M2M), etc. However, there are challenges to integrate different technologies which use different protocols and standards.

Thanks to the 5G mobile network's characteristics such as high speed and low latency compared to its predecessors, it satisfies the performance requirements of different technologies as well as flexibility and mobility. The goal of this thesis is to develop a solution to deploy not only configurations but also applications from Cloud to Edge in real-time so that different parts of a supply chain can communicate in real-time. Moreover, students can develop experiments to test and evaluate such a solution in industrial use cases.
At HMS Labs, we have already studied and developed the required infrastructure hardware and software for real-time communications which can provide this thesis project with.

The project should consider below criteria :

  • Study state-of-the-art in industrial 5G, Industry 4.0, and TSN,
  • High efficiency and real-time response is the key point throughout the solution,
  • Security of deployed application in terms of authenticity and integrity
  • Connect multiple edge devices efficiently,
  • Develop Cloud-based management application for the solution is a bonus.

The project and scope can be adjusted to the size of the group and the participants.

Prerequisites:
Bachelor or master program within computer science or similar. Experience in a programming environment suitable for cloud and embedded development like Python or Java, knowledge in computer networks, and experience in C/C++, make, CMake is an advantage.
