2D or 3D sensor based positioning with millimetre precision

Title: 2D or 3D sensor based positioning with millimetre precision

Department: HMS Labs

Size: 1-4 students

Scope: Computer vision, Artificial Intelligence

Description: There is an increasing interest in intelligent applications for industrial use cases. One area that needs to be solved is the precise positioning of mobile machines. Mobile machines are commonly battery operated and connected by a wireless connection. Wireless technology such as 5G can achieve indoor positioning with an accuracy of 3 meters. In many cases, however, millimetre precision is required. So in this case 5G indoor positioning can identify which floor and which part of the floor the mobile machine is in. In addition fine grained positioning is needed as an example when picking up objects.

The goal of this thesis project is to develop a computer vision solution for fine grained positioning. The solution should combine course grained wireless positioning with fine grained positioning based on 2D or 3D sensors. In addition other types of positioning can be included as well. This includes for example dead reckoning based on an Inertial Navigation System (INS).

It is envisioned that many mobile machines will exist within the same facility, so the positioning system should have a centralized architecture.

The project and scope can be adjusted to the size of the group and the participants.

Prerequisites:
Bachelor or master program within computer science or similar. Experience in a programming environment suitable for AI development like Python or Matlab, knowledge in artificial intelligence and computer vision, and experience in C/C++, make, CMake is an advantage.
